A perennial grass native to India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, East Indian lemongrass (aka Citronella) is grown for the intense lemony scent of its leaves and stems.
Known as Cymbopogon and native to Asia, this herbaceous species includes around fifty varieties known today from tropical climates. Besides being known for its fragrance, it is also widely used in cooking and medicinal purposes.
Do not confuse East Indian lemongrass with Melissa officinalis L which is a perennial plant in the botanical family Lamiaceae.
